The challenge we have with our web site is that
the area around the Resort has so many Things To Do that doing them
all justice is very difficult. Our objective in this area is to give you
a flavor of the many activities that are available in the area.
With
five world famous marine parks within one hour of the Resort the
Sea
Safari Boat Tours,
Kayaking
Tours,
Snorkeling
Tours and scuba diving are some of the best in the world.
Our Savary Island Hiking/Biking
Trips are an excellent way to explore the
sandy beaches that surround this beautiful island. Also at our doorstep is a vast temperate rainforest backed by the
majestic Coast Mountain range containing over thirty-one inland
lakes which together provide great guided trout fishing, 4x4ing
tours,
hiking, and
canoeing opportunities. Please follow the links above for more information
on each of the
activities. Depending on your needs we can provide directions/maps,
equipment rentals and guides for each of these activities. Most of
these activities can be undertaken year round given the proper clothing.
The winter cold water temperatures and stronger winds make some of the
water-based activities more difficult.
Desolation
Sound Marine Park is the crown jewel of the BC marine parks from a rugged
scenic beauty perspective, while the Ragged Islands Marine Park provides
unparalleled opportunities to see a huge array of inter-tidal marine life.
With thirteen different varieties of sea stars, huge urchins, giant tube
anemones, sea cucumbers and massive soft sponges the variety and color of
the local marine life is a must-see. Mitlenatch Island Nature
Preserve provides the opportunity to see huge seal, sea lion and bird
colonies while Teakerne Arm Marine Park is home to the 30m Cassel Falls.
You can visit these parks on one of our
Sea Safari Boat Tours, our
Snorkeling Tours, or by
Kayaking Tour.
More detailed information about the parks is available in the above pages.
No
trip to the area would be complete without spending at least a day
exploring Savary Island
which is known as the "Hawaiian Island of the North" thanks to it's white sand
beaches and warm summer water temperatures. Due to the way the tides
wrap around Vancouver Island, the water around the Resort is the warmest
ocean water in Canada with summer water temperatures averaging 22° Celsius. The island is reached via a 10 minute water taxi trip and can be
explored by foot or by bike. For those looking for a lower effort
way to enjoy the beaches of Savary we can arrange to drop you off by boat
on a different beach each day with a beach blanket and a picnic lunch.
Savary
Island is so beautiful we gave it its own page so we could put more
pictures in.
The
temperate rainforest that surrounds the Resort is backed by the majestic
Coast Mountains which provides for stunning sightseeing and photography
opportunities. There are dense mossy forests, huge towering trees,
bolder strewn mountain streams, dozens of picturesque lakes and more
shades of green to be discovered than you could possibly imagine.
The forest, mountains and thirty-one inland lakes are accessible via
hiking trails and logging roads. Many of the hundreds of kilometers
of logging roads are accessible in a car with good clearance while those
with a 4x4 will be able to range further a field and access the
decommissioned roads. A number of the logging roads are only
accessible on the weekends due to active logging truck traffic during the
week. The logging roads provide access to the 57km Powell Forest
Canoe Route and the 180km Sunshine Coast Hiking Trail. Both
the canoe route and the hiking trail have multiple access points enabling
sections of them to be accessed as day trips. We've spent years
exploring the logging trails and have still only scratched the surface of
what the area has to offer. Bring you binoculars, cameras and lots
of film because we guarantee you will be awed by what you will see in the
area. Please see our
canoeing and
hiking pages for more information.
For those fishing enthusiasts it should be noted than many of our lakes
are home to trophy sized lake, cutthroat and brown trout. As well as
providing maps and directions we would be happy to arrange a local 4x4 guides,
trout fishing guides
or equipment rentals.
If you enjoy golfing, Myrtle Point Golf
Club offers an excellent 18 hole golf course overlooking the Strait
of Georgia and the Comox Glaciers. The course is one of Canadian
golf course architect
Les Furber's best design efforts. With four sets of tee boxes on
each hole the course allows players of all abilities to enjoy a
challenging experience. The club is staffed by CPGA professionals,
has a driving range, fully stocked pro shop, restaurant, locker rooms with
showers and offers golf club and power cart rentals. The
course is a 30 minute drive from the Resort and we would be please to
arrange tee-off times to meet your needs.
