Savary Island

Savary Island is truly unique and is often referred to as the "Hawaiian Island of North" due to its white sand beaches and warm water. Savary Island is crescent shaped bring 8km long and just under 1km at it's widest. Surrounded by white sand beaches the island provides for excellent biking, swimming and beachcombing. Along the shore you can look for Lewis's moonsnails, sand dollars, a number of different clams and a range of limpets, whelks, dogwinkles and chitons. Optionally, with a mask and snorkel you can float over beds with thousands of eccentric sand dollars, hunt for dungeness, rock and kelp crabs or look for a variety of shore fish such as small sole, poachers, sculpin or perch.  Our Savary Island Picture Gallery provides more pictures of some of the things you can expect to see during your visit to Savary Island.

Beach on Savary IslandWe offer private transportation to/from Savary Island aboard the Resort's Transport Canada certified 22' tour boat.   The return trip from Lund or the Resort to the pier on Savary Island is $25pp while a drop off at the far end of the island is $40pp.  We also offer bike rentals for $25pp for the day.  Our bikes are 21 speed mountain bikes with click-to-shift derailers and we have a range of frame sizes available.  The bikes are cleaned and serviced after each use so they are extremely well maintained. The biking is ‘fairly’ easy but in there are some small hills.  Through a combination of biking, hiking, beachcombing, snorkeling and swimming you can set your own pace to experience the many facets of Savary Island.  Reservations are required in advance.

The majority of Savary Island is composed of Quadra Sand deposited during the Halocene and Pleistocene ages 11-20 thousand years ago. Past the sand beaches and bluffs is a stabilized dune environment forested over with cedar, fir, hemlock and arbutus (the island is home to the largest arbutus tree in BC). The sandy soils create a unique environment on the coast which is the home to a number of rare plant species. The interior of the island is a quilt work of unpaved roads, walking paths and eclectic cabins. Due to the difficulty and expense of transporting materials to the island many of the cottages are home-built from trees fallen and milled on the island which resulted in pleasant mix of architectural styles. Though there are a few vehicles on the island the major method of locomotion is by foot or bike.

Prior to departing for the water taxi trip to Savary Island we will provide you with a map, an orientation to the Island and help you select a route for the day.  Some people pick a private spot on one of the many beaches and spend the day, while others hike the perimeter of the Island.  We feel the best way to see the Island is by bike stopping and spending time at the many beach access points.
