The Ragged Islands is a designated
BC Provincial Marine Park with a unique eco-system. The 437-hectare
archipelago is comprised of four islands and fourteen islets which make
for excellent kayaking as there are many sheltered bays, coves
and passages to explore. Some of the islands have vertical cliffs that
plunge 150 feet straight down into the water while others have gently
sloping rocky beaches creating the perfect habitat for oyster and clam beds.
The waters in and around the archipelago support a wide variety of marine
life which you will be able to explore and interact with during the day.
As the tide changes new areas of
the intertidal zone become visible providing a constantly changing
panorama
of marine life to explore. In the water you are likely to see many
different types of sea stars, urchins,
anemones, oysters, crabs, c lams, sea cucumbers, jelly fish and seals
as you paddle around the islands. Above the water the park also supports a variety of
sea birds including several species of gulls, ducks, loons, pipers,
plovers and cormorants. Many of the birds are migratory so different
species congregate in the Park throughout the year. In the summer, it is
not uncommon to see bald eagles soaring above the islands. Why are purple
stars hard and all the other stars soft? When is a purple star not purple?
How do you tell the difference between a morning sun star and a sunflower
star? Where would you look for a butter clam? What’s the safest way to
open an oyster? Where is the only place a seal will eat a salmon? Your
interpretive guide will answer all these questions and many more as you
explore the archipelago. Our
Kayaking Picture Gallery provides
more pictures of some of the things you can expect to see during your
kayaking tour.

If you are new to kayaking the day
will let you build upon the skills you developed on the mountain lakes
day. Throughout the day your guide will provide casual instruction to bolster
your skills and confidence allowing you to enjoy the true wonders of sea
kayaking; rich marine life and intriguing panoramic views as seen only
when one "sits on the water".
While cruising into Desolation
Sound on a yacht let’s you experience the "big-picture" of BC’s coastline,
kayaking in the Ragged Islands is all about a very personal, up-close interaction
with the natural beauty of BC’s rugged coastline. You will spend the day
quietly exploring the islands and the marine life that abounds there.
We explore here regularly but continue to be awed by the constantly
changing cacophony of life within the park.
