The
sheltered waters of Okeover Inlet make it an excellent area for both new
and experienced kayakers. The inlet is backed by the Malaspina
Peninsula on one side and the Coast Mountains on the other.
Departing from Penrose Bay you will kayak up the inlet and into Desolation
Sound Marine Park. This world renown Marine Park is only
accessible via watercraft. Depending on the tides several rock walls
and beaches along the way make for excellent viewing of a range of sea
stars and other inter-tidal marine life. It is often possible to see
seals playing in the kelp beds or sunbathing on the rocks and depending on
the time of year spotting an eagle in the tree tops is common.
Our Kayaking Picture
Gallery provides more pictures of some of the things you
can expect to see during your kayaking tour.
You
need not have kayaked before to enjoy this activity. The day will start
with a qualified instructor ‘fitting’ you to a kayak, explaining entry and
exit techniques and the basic paddling strokes. Kayaking is an easy activity to
learn given the proper instruction. It is much easier to learn to kayak,
for example, than to learn to canoe as a kayak has a rudder whereas with a
canoe all steering must be done with precise paddling technique. You will
be surprised at how quickly you are in the water and paddling along. Throughout the day the
instructor will provide casual
instruction to bolster your skills and confidence.
Key to an enjoyable kayaking
experience are the equipment and the guides. From an equipment perspective
all of the kayaks are current model, high quality, fiberglass touring
kayaks from two of the best manufacturers in the industry; Current Designs
and Nimbus. With a large number of singles and doubles to choose from we
will provide you with a boat that fits your body type. For novice
kayakers
doubles are recommended as they are more stable and require half the
effort to get from point A to point B as there is two of you providing the
propulsion. We also provide all of the necessary safety gear such as
paddling jackets, spray skirts, throw bags, spare paddles, whistles etc.
Though it is extremely unlikely that you will have to use any of this gear
it provides peace of mind knowing that it is there and that you have been
provided instruction on how to use it. Our guides are all professional
guides who have made this their career. Our minimum guide qualifications
are;
-
Sea Kayak Guiding Course as per
the Sea Kayak Guides Alliance of BC
-
Advanced Wilderness First Aid
Certification ( 80+ hours)
-
Level C CPR
-
Marine VHF Radio License
-
Minimum five years experience in
outdoor guiding (often 10+ years)
Our guides are also selected for
having demonstrated strong leadership skills, excellent communication
skills and having a good knowledge of the local area history and
eco-systems.
